Water is one of the most destructive forces that can destroy your home. Water can enter the home from heavy raining and flooding, burst or broken pipes, or a simple appliance malfunctions. Regardless of the cause, the unwanted water will begin to deteriorate your home immediately, and if the issue is treated improperly the excess moisture will lead to other issues, like mold.

With any type of water damage, it’s important to first identify the type of water that has entered your home. There are three categories of water and two of which pose serious health risks.

Types of Water Damage

• Clean Water. Clean water does not cause a threat to you and may come from broken supply lines or overflowing sinks and bathtubs.

• Grey Water. Grey water may cause sickness or discomfort to you or your pets due to chemical, biological, or physical contaminants. This water may come from an overflowing washing machine or an overflowing toilet (not containing feces). 
• Black Water. Black water will cause serious illnesses to you and your pets from the harmful bacteria and fungus that pollute this water. This water is a result of sewage backups, overflowing toilets (containing feces), or flooding from bodies of water (lakes, rivers, oceans, streams), among other causes. It is also important to note, if grey water is left untreated it can quickly become black water. 

In some cases, depending on how much water is in your home, you can jump-start the water extraction process if you have the right equipment.

Steps to Proper Water Extraction

1. Remove. Remove as much water as possible with pumps and wet-dry vacuums. 
2. Dry. Dry out the area by placing fans and dehumidifiers around the affected area. If possible, you can open windows and doors to accumulate fresh air.
3. Relocate. Relocate all affected personal belonging and furniture to a dry, clean area to reduce the chances of mold growth. Allow belongings to dry for at least 48 hours.

Untreated Water Damage

There is an extensive amount of damage that water can cause if left untreated. From cosmetic damage to mold, it is extremely important to know the signs of water damage and what to look out for in the affected areas.

• Cosmetic Damage. Cosmetic damage includes discoloration on the surfaces around your home and workplace including ceilings, walls, carpets, floors, cabinets, etc. This damage can begin to weaken the drywall and tarnish metal with only a few hours of exposure to water.
• Structural Damage. Structural damage occurs depending on how much water is surrounding the affected area. The drywall can begin to deteriorate and the subfloor can easily warp or even split.
• Mold Growth. All three types of water can cause mold growth. Additionally, black water can lead to an increase in health risks due to the high levels of bacteria found in the water.
• Electrical Damage. Electrical damage can occur to your kitchen appliances, washing machines, dryers, hot water tanks, furnaces, and electrical outlets.
• Personal Items Damaged. Water can completely destroy all of your personal items including, photographs, books, electronics, personal documents, among other items if not acted on fast enough.

We discovered a broken pipe underneath our house rather late and Pulliam’s team came out within a few hours, showed up on time each day and carefully explained each step of the process. They were able to remove our flooded insulation and fan out the crawl space while recording what they found and helping us remediate the issues. May 31, 2012 my husband and I were notified that we were being forced to move out of our home, at no fault of our own. Needless to say, this news caused a lot of stress for us! My employer, Robert Pulliam - President of First Response, understood the emotions I was going through and offered the company's services to assist in the process of moving.
