Causes Of Mold In The Crawl Space

In most cases, crawl space mold is caused by excessed water or elevated humidity levels. Due to the location of the crawl space, it is extremely susceptible to exposure to water because it is so close to the ground. Many homes across Columbia will have a protective layer of plastic that will act as a barrier, but some homes are missing this protective plastic. We discovered a broken pipe underneath our house rather late and Pulliam’s team came out within a few hours, showed up on time each day and carefully explained each step of the process. They were able to remove our flooded insulation and fan out the crawl space while recording what they found and helping us remediate the issues. May 31, 2012 my husband and I were notified that we were being forced to move out of our home, at no fault of our own. Needless to say, this news caused a lot of stress for us! Signs Of Crawl Space Mold

If crawl space mold is caught early, you can prevent further contamination throughout the entire home. Mold can grow very quickly if given the proper environment, so it’s important to act quickly at the first sign of mold to prevent property and health damages. 

The most common sign of crawl space mold is the presence of unexplained allergy symptoms. This may include a runny nose, itchy or irritated eyes, migraines, or a sore or itchy throat. The symptoms are very common signs of a mold allergy. If you are experiencing unexplained allergy symptoms, call Pulliam Restoration and we will set up a mold inspection and test.

3 Tips To Prevent Crawl Space Mold 

1. Ensure the crawl space has proper ventilation. We suggest at least 1 sqft of ventilation for every 150 sqft of the crawl space. A well ventilated will promote faster drying if excess water does enter the space, which will prevent mold growth.
2. Make sure the plastic sheet in the crawl space is covering all of the dirt and goes up a few inches along the wall. If multiple sheets of plastic are needed, make sure there is an adequate amount of overlay. 
3. Adjust the gutter downspout to drain at least 6 feet away from the property. If the downspouts are not pointing at least 6 feet away, water can pool at the foundation and find it’s way into the crawl space.
